Nobel Prize for Indian activist!!!

New Delhi: India’s Ruth Manorama, a prominent women’s rights activist, has been named the joint winner of the Right Livelihood Awards, alternative Nobels’, for her crusade to achieve equality for Dalit women.

The jury honoured Manorama, a Dalit herself, ”for her commitment over decades to achieving equality for Dalit women, building effective and committed women’s organisations and working for their rights at national and international levels,” the official website of the Sweden-based awards said.

Manorama will share the prize money of $270,000 US with two other recipients – Daniel Ellsberg (USA) and the Festival Internacional de Poesia de Medellin (Colombia).

While Daniel Ellsberg’s ‘whistle blowing’ helped end the Vietnam War, the Festival Internacional de Poesia de Medellin, a unique poetry festival, helped build peace in one of the most violent cities in the world.

Founded in 1980, the annual Right Livelihood Awards are presented in the Swedish Parliament and this year, the ceremony will be held on December 8.

Jakob von Uexkull, a Swedish-German professional philatelist, sold his business to provide the original funding for the award. Since then the Award has been supported by individual donors.

They were introduced ”to honour and support those offering practical and exemplary answers to the most urgent challenges facing us today”.

PayPerPost ROCKS NBC

Hey all,
Ok. Let me start off. Over the few weeks, you’ve been hearing a lot on PayPerPost (PPP) from me. Today, they did, what I would call, a bloody clever step to get more viewership! I wouldnt be posting this here, but this one was SO hilarious, that I should be taking my hat off to the person who dreamt it up! (BTW, I DONT wear a hat :P )

PPP did a brilliant Guerilla Marketing today! What they did was, they stormed, and rocked NBC tv. i.e. In a show called “Today Show” many people (OK! Gals!) wearing PPP t-shirts and sporting PPP banners stormed the show! They got free airtime to over a million viewers!!! Yes dear readers! Thet actually did! I say that it was cool, and brilliant! I’ve asked them for a t-shirt too ;) I didnt catch the show, but I heard from a few people who DID! They said it was cool!

Anyway, I’m going to try that out for BlogForPeace… Maybe I’ll try some other tv channel :P By the way, if any of you are interested in viewing a video released by PPP, check out http://blog.payperpost.com/2006/09/we-storm-today-show.html . I dont know about the Today Show, but they HAVE shown a lot of the pre-show procedures :P Shopping, creating banners and sorts… I didn’t see the full video, since my bandwidth was at the limit, and I’ll have to wait till the end of this month to get more BWD :)
    Aloha for now :)

Pope’s respect for Islam ||| Report by CNN

Italy: Pope Benedict told Muslim
envoys on Monday that Christian and Muslim believers must reject
violence, in an audience meant to defuse anger at his use of quotes
saying Islam was spread by the sword.

The Pope expressed his “esteem and
profound respect” for members of the Islamic faith in a meeting with
diplomatic envoys from some 20 Muslim countries plus the leaders of
Italy’s own Muslim community at his summer residence, Castelgandolfo.

“Christians and Muslims must learn to work
together in order to guard against all forms of intolerance and to
oppose all manifestations of violence,” said the 79-year-old Pope.

It was the fourth time he had tried to
make amends to Muslims, without actually apologising directly, for a
speech at a university in his native Germany on September 12.

The leader of more than 1 billion Roman
Catholics has expressed regret at the response to his quoting
14th-century Byzantine Emperor Manuel II Palaeologus, who said the
Prophet Mohammad commanded his followers “to spread by the sword the
faith he preached”.

The Pope has said his intention was to explain that religion goes together with reason, not with violence.

His speech to Muslim envoys, delivered in
French but also immediately made available by the Vatican in Arabic,
made repeated references to the need for dialogue between faiths.

Mario Scialoja, an adviser to the Italian
section of the World Muslim League who attended the audience, said
afterwards he thought it was a “very good and warm speech”.

“He recalled the differences but expressed
his willingness to continue in a cordial and fruitful dialogue, said
Scialoja, who added that he “had not been expecting another apology”.

The envoys invited included those from
major Muslim countries such as Indonesia, Egypt, Pakistan, Turkey, Iran
and Iraq, plus the Arab League.

Thousands of Muslims demonstrated against
the Pope after last Friday’s prayers at mosques around the world, but
the anger and the size of the protests appears to be diminishing.

The Pope is facing the toughest
international crisis since his election in April, 2005, and the
vehemence of some reactions has raised doubts about a planned trip to
Turkey in November.

Mehmet Ali Agca, the Turk who tried to
kill Pope John Paul II in 1981, warned Benedict not to travel to
Turkey, saying his life would be at risk.

SOURCE : CNN IBN

The Pope is making amends to his previous sentences… Well, I don’t know how far people will accept it, but for the good of his popedom, people better accept it :P

Anyone want to visit India? A great website for you!

Hey all,
Anyone knew that the BlogForPeace HQ is located in India? Anyone knew that India is a land rich in culture and tradition? Anyone knew that India would be a perfect place for you to relax? If you did not, know it now :)
Welcome to India, the land of it all :) The reason I’m writing this post is that it would be useful for anyone who wants to visit India… For more info. on the beauty of India, check out my previous posts.

Anyway, back to the topic, I found a cool site called www.inasra.com .

Its a great site giving you details, and reservation services for many a hotel in India. Inasra is actually a booking portal, and according to what I’ve seen, they cover over 1000 hotels over 200 Indian cities! Additionally, they provide quality information on these hotels, destinations, directions etc. You can select a hotel, and reserve a room quite easily!

The reason for me to look up this site was that one of my friends asked me about hotels in India. So searched for such a site and came up with Inasra.

I didnt believe the functionalities of this site at first. So to
test it all out, I checked out the hotels listed in my own state,
Kerala. It was amazing how it listed almost 47 deluxe lodging centres in Kerala! The site displayed even the number of beds available in the hotels in my hometown, Kochi!

So if anyone is interested in travelling to India, do check out Inasra! Ciao!

A peace poem… “A walk in the gardens of peace…”

Hey all,
Here’s a poem I wrote today, favouring peace, love and brotherhood… Comments are welcome :)

A walk in the gardens of peace…

A blower blooming ahead of July,
Making me smile, for it did try;
Refelections past, mirrors lusture
The ways of life, Peace’s sceptre!

A rose, blooms, red with blood,
Peace, an infant, still a bud-
Yet unborn; Behold, shining war,
Do bloom, without thou, we cannot soar!

Love, in sense, doth lack in us,
Makes way for pride, for jealousy, it does!
Oh sweet Brother, behold,
What you have made, of this shining mould!

Walking through, you can perceive,
The colours of peace, flowers weave.
Fill that hollow, of love, of peace,
Live in glory, with Doves, and Trees.

                                        - Neo Garfield
                                          24.9.2006

Hmmm? I hope all my literics here enjoyed the poem. Please do send in your valuble comments….. Thanky you :)

Pinion - File Security ||| Encrypt your CAD Files!

Hello all.
Due to popular demand, I’m sumbitting a review of Pinion File Security. Pinion is a CAD Protection Technology development company.

As they say in the site, most of today’s architecture is done using CAD. CAD is the basic infrastructure for any building or high rise we see in the neighbourhood. Thus, the design process involves transfer of data via email, or other electronic medium. A suprising amount of such data transfers are done without proper encryption.

In other words, they lack file security. In today’s world, when piracy and spying is at the max, file security is a very big issue. Pinion has many products concentrating on File Security. Pinion allowes a designer to secure his/her CAD files, and set permissions on how the recipient uses the file. Their main producst include -

  • SecureShare™ - Highly-customizeable developers’ tool-kit that extends enterprise PLM and other technical data management systems with in-use security.

  • Desktop Packager - Windows-based client software for protecting email messages and file attachments. Ideal for users in small and medium-sized businesses!
  • SecureCD™ - Secures information distributed on CD-ROM by expiring access to its data, detecting if a CD is an original, preventing copying of data from a CD to another storage device (including hard drives), allowing file access only if the original CD is present, and locking individual CDs to specific users’ computers.
  • Sanitizer™ - Completely removes all data from hard drives. The average PC turnover is three years, causing a steady leak of confidential information. Sanitizer (approved by Defense Security Services) uses patented overwrite technology to ensure the fastest and most complete data-removal process available.
  • Receiver™ - Controls the in-use applications and documents that have been “Pintected” using the other Pinion Software offerings. This application prevents unauthorized usage of the document according to the permissions that were attached to it.

Pinion Receiver 4.0 Beta is creating a buzz over the information technology world. Another addon to Pionion’s array of file security software, it controls applications and documents which are being used.

Visit their website on more information about protecting CAD files, and File Security.

I hope that my ever-tech hungry readers are satisfied. For those of my more philosophical readers, watch out for the next post… Coming up next… A poem…
    Toodles for now :)

HOT NEWS! Cops link 7/11 case to 9/11 bombings

New Delhi/Mumbai: Claiming a
breakthrough in the 7/11 Mumbai blasts investigations, Mumbai police
have traced a 9/11 link to the Mumbai blasts that claimed almost 200
lives and rattled India’s business capital.

Officials claim the Mumbai train blasts were funded by terrorist outfit al-Qaeda and that some of the accused in the 7/11 case had trained with the prime accused of the World Trade Centre attacks.

The blasts were carried out by Lashkar-e-Toiba, they claim. These revelations are based on hard evidence collected by the Anti-Terrorism Squad and investigators over the last two months.

The details, available exclusively with CNN-IBN, show that at least three of the accused in the Mumbai blasts had trained with the prime accused of the World Trade Centre attacks in
New York on Septmeber 11, 2001 - the deadliest terror attack in world
history that killed about 3,000 people.

Sources in the Maharashtra Government have also confirmed that:

  • The leader of the al-Qaeda
group that carried out the 9/11 operation, Mohammad Atta, had
interacted and trained with at least three of the men who carried out
7/11 serial bombings in Mumbai. The interaction took place in a terror
training camp in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir in 2000.
  • Officials claim there is evidence
to prove that the funding came from al-Qaeda sources and was routed
    through Hawala channels from Dubai.
  • They also claim to have fresh evidence about the 9/11 conspiracy.
  • The Maharashtra government now
says it is in a position to share this information with the FBI, and is
seeking the Centre’s permission on the matter.

Sources in the Maharashtra government claim 17 people were directly involved in the 7/11 serial bombings, and all of them are now in police custody. While a majority of them are from Kashmir, a few allegedly hailed from Bangladesh.

All 17 accused had allegedly undergone
training in camps across the border in Pakistan-Occupied-Kashmir. Three
of the accused have confessed to training in Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir
in 2000 alongside the attackers of the World Trade centre.

Some of the crucial leads in the probe
have emerged out of the interrogation of suspects picked by the police
after Maharashtra Home Minister RR Patil’s visit to Malegaon follwing
the bombings.

The accused have revealed that both the
Malegaon Bombings and the 7/11 serial blasts could have been carried
out by the same group with the sole aim of creating communal trouble.

The crucial link between the mosque
bombings in Malegaon and the Mumbai train blasts not only goes to show
the extent of terrorists’ sinister plans, but also the entire
conspiracy is part of the larger global design to spread terror coming
from virtually one source - the al-Qaeda.

PPP - Photo Fun on a bored night…

Hiya…
I’ve got loads of stuff to do… But I’m lazy… I dont want to do the stuff… But now I’m bored. So I checked out my 5 year old low end Logitech camera, and to my delight (uh…) I found that it was still working!!!

I took out my black marker, and had some fun with my hand, while publicizing my new favuorite website :P Everyone, have a look at my hand advertising PayPerPost! If you dont know it yet, PayPerPost, or PPP, is a website focusing on Consumer Generated Advertising - which is the advertising by users, technically consumers, thereby analyzing a better stand in the marketing. In layman’s terms, THEY PAY YOU TO BLOG! :P :P :P
By the way, if you’re going to sign up at PayPerPost.com, please use the referrer id as
“coolmohan@gmail.com” … Now check out my picz :)

Like they say in Cricket, HOWZAT?
I just happen to be in the mood of more fun :P     1 marker = $0.50
    1 hand     = $ 5000
    1 toilet soap for washing = $ .75
1 hand mutilated by the ad of a consumer generated advertising company - PRICELESS!

:) I had my fun. You had yours :) Aloha for now ;)

In the line of fire…

Hello all,
I came across this very meaningful message in a forwarded email. YES, a forwarded email. I usually receive hundreds of forwards, which I direct to “Archive” in my Gmail account, but this one caught my eye. I’m sure you will appreciate it as well!

It is about 2 Indians talking in a 1st class compartment in an Indian train. But before I begin, I would like to say that the moral of the story takes root in war - and this post is NOT meant to promote non-violence, but to instill the thoughts of humility… Read on… :)

In the Line of Fire

Vivek
Pradhan wasn’t a happy man. Even the plush comfort of the First Class
air-conditioned compartment of the Shatabdi Express couldn’t cool his
frayed nerves. He was the Project Manager and still not entitled to air
travel. It was not the prestige he sought, he had tried to reason with
the admin guy, it was the savings in time. APM had so many things to do!

He opened his case and took out the laptop, determined to put the time to
some good use. “Are you from the software industry sir,” the man beside
him was staring appreciatively at the laptop.

Vivek glanced briefly and mumbled in affirmation, handling the laptop now
with exaggerated care and importance as if it were an expensive car.

“You people have brought so much advancement to the country sir. Today everything is getting computerized.”

‘Thanks,” smiled Vivek, turning around to give the man a detailed look.

He always found it difficult to resist appreciation. The man was young and
stocky like a sportsman. He looked simple and strangely out of place in
that little lap of luxury like a small town boy in a prep school. He
probably was a Railway sportsman making the most of his free traveling
pass.

“You people always amaze me,” the man continued, “You sit in an office and write something on a computer and it does so many big things outside.”

Vivek smiled deprecatingly. Naivety demanded reasoning not anger. “It is not as simple as that my friend.
It is not just a question of writing a few lines. There is a lot of
process that goes behind it.” For a moment he was tempted to explain
the entire Software Development Lifecycle but restrained himself to a
single statement. “It is complex, very complex.”

“It has to be. No wonder you people are so highly paid,” came the reply.
This was not turning out as Vivek had thought. A hint of belligerence
came into his so far affable, persuasive tone.

“Everyone just sees the money. No one sees the amount of hard work we have to put in.” “Hard work!”

“Indians have such a narrow concept of hard work. Just because we sit in an
air-conditioned office doesn’t mean our brows don’t sweat. You exercise
the muscle; we exercise the mind and believe me that is no less taxing.”

He had the man where he wanted him and it was time to drive home the
point. “Let me give you an example. Take this train. The entire railway
reservation system is computerized. You can book a train ticket between
any two stations from any of the hundreds of computerized booking
centers across the country.

Thousands of transactions accessing a single database at a given time;
concurrency, data integrity, locking, data security. Do you understand
the complexity in designing and coding such a system?”

The man was stuck with amazement, like a child at a planetarium. This was something big and beyond his imagination. “You design and code such things.”

“I used to,” Vivek paused for effect, “But now I am the project manager,”
“Oh!” sighed the man, as if the storm had passed over,“so your life is easy now.”

It was like being told the fire was better than the frying pan. The man had to be given a feel of the heat.

“Ohcome on, does life ever get easy as you go up the ladder.
Responsibility only brings more work. Design and coding! That is the
easier part. Now I don’t do it, but I am responsible for it and believe
me, that is far more stressful. My job is to get the work done in time
and with the highest quality. And to tell you about the pressures!
There is the customer at one End always changing his requirements, the user wanting something else and your boss always expecting you to have finished it yesterday.”

Vivek paused in his diatribe, his belligerence fading with self-realisation.
What he had said was not merely the outburst of a wronged man, it was
the truth. And one need not get angry while defending the truth.”My
friend,” he concluded triumphantly, “you don’t know what it is to be in the line of fire.”

The man sat back in his chair, his eyes closed as if in realization.

When he spoke after sometime, it was with a calm certainty that surprised
Vivek.”I know sir, I know what it is to be in the line of fire,” He was
staring blankly as if no passenger, no train existed, just a vast
expanse of time. “There were 30 of us when we were ordered to capture
Point 4875 in the cover of the night. The enemy was firing from the
top. There was no knowing where the next bullet was going to come from and for whom. In
the morning when we finally hoisted the tricolor at the top only 4 of
us were alive.”

“You are a…”

“I am Subedar Sushant from the 13 J&K Rifles on duty at Peak 4875 in
Kargil. They tell me I have completed my term and can opt for a land
assignment. But tell me sir, can one give up duty just because it makes
life easier. On the dawn of that capture one of my colleagues lay
injured in the snow, open to enemy fire while we were hiding behind a
bunker. It was my job to go and fetch that soldier to safety. But my captain refused me
permission and went ahead himself. He said that the first pledge he had
taken as a Gentleman Cadet was to put the safety and welfare of the
nation foremost followed by the safety and welfare of the men he
commanded. His own personal safety came last, always and every time. He
was killed as he shielded that soldier into the bunker. Every morning
now as I stand guard I can see him taking all those bullets, which were actually meant for me.

I know sir, I know what it is to be in the line of fire.”

Vivek looked at him in disbelief not sure of his reply. Abruptly he switched
off the laptop. It seemed trivial, even insulting to edit a word
document in the presence of a man for whom valor and duty was a daily
part of life; a valor and sense of duty which he had so far attributed
only to epical heroes.

The train slowed down as it pulled into the station and Subedar Sushant picked up his bags to alight.
“It was nice meeting you sir.” Vivek fumbled with the handshake. This was
the hand that had climbed mountains, pressed the trigger and hoisted
the tricolor. Suddenly as if by impulse he stood at attention, and his
right hand went up in an impromptu salute.

It was the least he felt he could do for the country…

PS:
The incident he narrates during the capture of Peak 4875 is a true life
incident during the Kargil war. Major Batra sacrificed his life while
trying to save one of the men he commanded, as victory was within
sight. For this and his various other acts of bravery he was awarded
the Param Vir Chakra - the nation’s highest military award.

Live humbly, there are great people around us, let us learn!

Hmmm. I sense that you’re moved by the story… So were I… :) Interesting to note how things turn out… So anyway, I hope I have conveyed the message I wanted to convey. Thanks to “Mohan D Menon” from “Coimbatore, India” for this wonderful mail! :)

Cheerios….

Scoble vs PayPerPost = Tom vs Jerry

Hey all,
You’ve all been hearing about PayPerPost a lot during these past few days. The fact remains - I’m quite eager and excited on the prospect of getting paid to post :P Before I continue with this post, let me tell you this,I Get Paid to Blog by PayPerPost. Many of my posts here are sponsered by PayPerPost, and Im thankful to them. If you’re interested in PayPerPost, check out www.payperpost.com, and remember to use my e-mail id(coolmohan@gmail.com) as the referrer email if you sign up :)
Back to the topic, recently, I came to know that there were many disparities in the blogosphere when the concept of PayPerPost was first introduced. One of the many people to scoff were Microsoft Certified Geek Blogger, Robert Scoble. Interesting to note how things have changed… Check out the pictures below…

Mr. Robert Scoble himself looking at the PPP ad on his tablet PC. The 2nd image is the reversed version of the first image, so as to catch the text properly :)

[both images posted at flickr as well : http://flickr.com/photos/neogarfield/246708115/ & http://flickr.com/photos/neogarfield/246708121/]

Heh heh. Quite a transformation, if you ask me :P
This guy is paid heftly by Microsoft for many zillion things. He might be getting paid a million dollars, for all heaven knows! But this capitalistic attitude wants himself to be the only person getting paid. Actually, when he vehemently protested against PPP, he hadnt even bothered to research a bit. He said that PPP was like a bondchain for bloggers. Well, I dont think so. I’ve been using PPP for only a few days now, but I’m quite satisfied :)
Mr Scoble vs PayPerPost is like Tom vs Jerry. Tom’s the bad guy, who doesnt want good to happen to Jerry. He tries to lay out traps for Jerry. But somehow, Jerry always manages to get the upper hand ;) Sorry Robert, but thats life ;)
I think that elitists like Mr Scoble here should be maintained. We do need the ecosystem balance - the bad is always necessary for the good to survive ;) Dear reader, what do YOU think? Give me your comments! Thanky you! And thats all for today :)

Peace - A Poem by Swami Vivekananda

Hiya!
If you’ve been wondering where I was, and why I had deviated from my usual “serious” style of writing, well, I figured that you might want a change ;) But, here I’m back in my true form. Ladies and gentlemen, let me present you a song written by the great philosopher Swami Vivekananda.

This poem speaks of peace. It talks of how paradoxic peace is. It talks about the joy and tranquility of peace. I hope you enjoy the poem as much as I did :)

Peace

Behold, it comes in might,
The power that is not power,
The light that is in darkness,
The shade in dazzling light.

It is joy that never spoke,
And grief unfelt, profound,
Immortal life unlived,
Eternal death unmourned.

It is not joy nor sorrow,
But that which is between,
It is not noght nor morrow,
But that which joins them in.

It is sweet rest in music;
And pause in sacred art;
The silence between speaking;
Between two fits of passion –
It is the calm of heart.

It is beauty never seen,
And love that stands alone,
It is song that lives un-sung,
And knowledge never known.

It is death between two lives,
And lull between two storms,
The void whence rose creation,
And that where it returns.

To it the tear-drop goes,
To spread the smiling form
It is the Goal of Life,
And Peace — its only home!

                        - Swami Vivekananda

How was the poem dear reader? He speakest sooth! Peace IS definitely  “the beauty never seen” and the “love that stands alone”. Makes you wonder about why we fight. Why we waste lives for trivial reasons. Why we are so jealous of our own lives, but dont give a damn to others. Makes you think of the reason for it all…. The battle…. The war…

So think it over beloved reader! Meanwhile, stay tuned to BlogForPeace… :)

Welcome, dear bloggers, to the New World… A world ruled by an innovative brainchild of Ted Murphy. An innovation - which gives a blogger free arms, freeing a blog of useless rectangle ads, but giving him money all the same! Welcome to the world where you can make money , by just blogging…

Welcome, to PayPerPost… If you’re signing up at PayPerPost(PPP), please use my referrer id : “neogarfield”. Anyway, PayPerPost enables a blogger to get money, without having to worry ads, clicks, or traffic. All you have to do, is blog on something the advertisers want. Aaand the best part is, you wont get banned for clicking on your own ads :P

You might be unconvinced…. Let me tell you my OWN story.  This January, I started off with BlogForPeace. I got a Google PR of 4 by March. Applied for Adsense by April. Ads on BlogForPeace - courtesy Google Adsense, by April end. $3.60 balance by May end. Banned by June end for “illegal clicks” - transalated to multiple clicks by some unknown person whom I would like to kill.

Anyway, after I got banned, I was quite disappointed. Came to the point of closing down BlogForPeace. But something drove me on. Last month I found PPP. But I couldn’t join ‘coz it was not for international publishers. Last week, finally I joined PPP. By blog got approved in like 2 days. This week, I started publishing posts for PPP. I did only 3 posts, and already I have $18.50 to my account. I plan on increasing it by the end of the month :P

So people, maybe you can evaluate which is better. Ofcourse, PPP also supports a cool support, a radical blog, and a superb forum. What else could be better for a blogger to make money???

  • Opposed to Adsense, PPP is faster, safer
  • More oppurtunities to make money in PPP
  • Make more money with PPP
  • Friendly, Quick Customer Support - a PPP trademark
  • Blog, Forums etc. spice up PPP
  • Skype support available in PPP
  • One click money transfer to PayPal ANYTIME you want! Only with PPP!

By now, I’ve nicknamed PPP as Passionate Personal Person ;) :P Rumours are spreading - is this the end of Adsense in the blogging world? Shall we see the death of Adsense, Bid Vertiser, Clicksor, AdBrite and many other PPCs? Anyway, if you’re interested in PPP, check out www.payperpost.com and use my referrer id “neogarfield” while signing up :)

Cheerio!
