Global Warming may steam up India… A report…

Hey all,
As you all know about the rising temperatures in our world, and you all pretty well know my stand against the meltdown, but anyway, recent reports claim that Global Warming will in fact heat up India!
A new report on the economics of climate
change has set off warning signals yet again – and this time its
developing nations like India that have been asked to move to low
carbon economies. But what does this really mean?

Floods in Barmer and Ladakh, a dry spell
in the usually wet North East, snow in summer and overflowing rivers –
freak weather was a frequent visitor in India this year.

And now a report by Nicholar Stern, former
chief economist of the World Bank, has put developing countries like
India and China on the back foot.

The reason: warning signals that could not only lead to climate change but could affect the country’s economy as well.

The 700 page report submitted to the
British government stresses the need for countries to shift to low
carbon economies immediately: that is end a lower use of fossil fuels
that lead to emission.

Environmental groups in India say this
transit to a low carbon economy is a necessity but developing nations
like India are not to be blamed alone.

IPCC Chairman R K Pachauri says, “The
stress is on India because we are a developing nation so we need energy
more. But developed countries shouldn’t be pointing fingers at us
because they have done their bit to pollute the environment. So they
should set their own house in order first.”

The tussle between environment and
industrialisation is not new. And even though solutions like the use of
renewable energy fuels has often been floated, there hasn’t been much
improvement.

CSE Director Sunita Narain says, “Can’t
de-link industrialisation from environment. Unfortunately it’s the rich
who are polluting for which we all pay the price. For growth to happen,
environment neglected.”

The Kyoto Protocol, which came into force
last year didn’t change much. The Nicholas Stern report is yet another
warning. How we heed it is our prerogative.

Interesting… Maybe I should get my icepacks out :)
