Me, Maths, CSA and more…
Hi all,
I had a truly out of the world experience yesterday. I had volunteered for the CSA, Center for Social Action, at Christ College, and I had joined the wing of CSA named Activity Center, which took classes for students from a slum area called Rajendranagar. The Activity Center head asked me if I wanted to join them yesterday, even before the official CSA inauguration on the 7th.
At Rajendranagar, we were greeted by eager kids shaking hands and saying “hello”s is several dialects. They were a bit apprehensive about approaching me, maybe because I was new, but we got on ok… I went with 2 Activity Center members, the Activity Center head Swathi, and another member, Vandana.
I was assigned to take Maths for the 8th grade students…
And there the story starts. Many students didnt even know the basic principles of multiplication and division. Everyone kept calling me “sir”
And they were like so enthusiastic with my presence, though I should say that at the end of the one and half hour session, I didn’t have kids hanging onto my hands, unlike my co-activists’ experiences. I succeeded in teaching a few the principles, and making everyone very Mathusiastic
The smiles on their faces when they got the solution to a problem, or when they did a few sums even faster than I did were sights I would never forget in my entire life. And when the time came for me to leave, a few of them did escort me down the stairs till the road. All of them said passionate “bye”s, though they didnt treat me to the traditional Rajendranagar hand shake.
And I left, walking through the broken streets with my counterparts, I had this unexplainable feeling… A mix of happiness, empathy, and enthusiasm. I was happy that they accepted me. I was happy that whatever little I did DID make a difference. I understood their situation and wanted to help in whatever way possible. And enthusiastic to be back and make more of that special difference!
Today, when I submitted my report, a CSA activist asked me about my experience. I told her that I had a “wonderful experience”. She asked me if I was being sarcastic. I gave her a quick smile, and my heart was grinning… Because little did she know how much my heart was willing to go to Rajendranagar every day; how much I would love to do this for the larger part of the day; how much I was looking forward to the next Thursday… the next Maths class… the next difference…
Give peace a chance - John Lennon
Hi all,
I came across this video of John Lennon singing a song named “Give peace a chance”. What enthralled me was that I had written a poem about a year back with the same name…
So heres the song (no, its not my poem
) but still a good one to hear and get inspired…

Sept 11 attacks stained onto glass in a Dutch cathedral
Hi all,
I’m sure all of us remember that dreadful day when more than 2800 people were killed by the cruel acts of terrorism by demolishing the Twin Towers. Yes. September 9th.
A cathedral in Netherlands has commissioned a new stained glass window which contains an image of the Twin Tower attacks. Reutuers reports that the window was blessed on Sunday by a Dutch Bishop.

The window, built up of about twenty different panes with representations of heaven and hell, has the WTC pane at the bottom showing “hell on earth”, its maker Marc Mulders said.
The pane shows an airplane about to crash in one of the Twin Towers on September 11, 2001.
“It was an assignment by the church to make a stained glass window that was related to the spirit of this time,” Mulders 48, said on his Web site, adding that he sees the WTC attacks as an image that speaks vividly to all people.
The window in the Sint Jan cathedral in Den Bosch, a city in the south of the Netherlands, has attracted the attention of the world’s media press because of the Twin Tower image, pastor Geert Jan van Rossem said.
Van Rossem said he expected the window to cause reflection from those who saw it.
“Innocent civilians were killed, that is shocking and makes people think,” he said.
A small crowd applauded and praised the window’s bright colors when the bishop revealed the stained glass window.

Let these artistic images leave behind a memory to remember… A memory to remind us how ghastly the world can get… A memory to remind us of the uglier sides of life… A memory to remind us, why world peace is essential…

Peace - A Poem by Swami Vivekananda
Hiya!
If you’ve been wondering where I was, and why I had deviated from my usual “serious” style of writing, well, I figured that you might want a change
But, here I’m back in my true form. Ladies and gentlemen, let me present you a song written by the great philosopher Swami Vivekananda.

This poem speaks of peace. It talks of how paradoxic peace is. It talks about the joy and tranquility of peace. I hope you enjoy the poem as much as I did
Peace
Behold, it comes in might,
The power that is not power,
The light that is in darkness,
The shade in dazzling light. It is joy that never spoke,
And grief unfelt, profound,
Immortal life unlived,
Eternal death unmourned.
It is not joy nor sorrow,
But that which is between,
It is not noght nor morrow,
But that which joins them in.
It is sweet rest in music;
And pause in sacred art;
The silence between speaking;
Between two fits of passion –
It is the calm of heart.
It is beauty never seen,
And love that stands alone,
It is song that lives un-sung,
And knowledge never known.
It is death between two lives,
And lull between two storms,
The void whence rose creation,
And that where it returns.
To it the tear-drop goes,
To spread the smiling form
It is the Goal of Life,
And Peace — its only home!- Swami Vivekananda
How was the poem dear reader? He speakest sooth! Peace IS definitely “the beauty never seen” and the “love that stands alone”. Makes you wonder about why we fight. Why we waste lives for trivial reasons. Why we are so jealous of our own lives, but dont give a damn to others. Makes you think of the reason for it all…. The battle…. The war…
So think it over beloved reader! Meanwhile, stay tuned to BlogForPeace…

Raksha Bandhan
Hello all,
Today, is Rakshabandhan, as celebrated by Indians.
Name sounds funny? Well, “raksha” means security/rescue and “bandhan”
means binding. In short, it means binding love, and brotherhood.

On raksha-bandhan, a girl ties a “rakhi” on a boy’s hand. The boy gives a sweet to the girl. Thus, the boy
becomes the girl’s brother, signifying love, and binding a
relationship. This ingenious way of spreading peace was developed right
from the Vedic ages.

Raksha Bandhan is primarily a North Indian festival kindling the deepest
emotions of love and affection amongst the siblings. Just like all Indian
festivals, this is also celebrated with lots of verve. The sister ties the rakhi on the brother’s wrist and both pray for each
others’ well being followed by a pledge from the brother to take care of his
sister under all circumstances. The brother then usually gifts something to
the sister to mark the occasion. Celebrated enveloped in the festivities.
The mirth that surrounds the festival is unsurpassed. Amidst the merriment
the rituals are also followed with great devotion. The rakhis and the sweets are bought and prepared generally before the
Purnima. As per the tradition the family members get ready for the rituals
early. They take a bath to purify mind and body before starting any
preparations. The sisters prepare the thali for the poojan. It contains the
rakhi threads, kumkum powder, rice grains, diya (an earthen or a metal lamp
used for worshiping), agarbattis (incense sticks) and sweets.First of all the offerings are made to the deities of the family. The
sister then performs the arti of the brother and ties the rakhi. She then
Tilaks (puts kumkum powder on the forehead) him and offers sweets. While
performing the rituals the Sister chants“Suraj shakhan chhodian, Mooli chhodia beej
Behen ne rakhi bandhi / Bhai tu chir jug jee”,Meaning “The sun radiates its sunlight, the radish spreads its
seeds,
I tie the rakhi to you O brother and wish that may you live long.”
After her prayer for a long life for her brother, she says that she is
tying the ever-protective Raksha to her brother chanting:“Yena baddho Balee raajaa daanavendro
mahaabalah
tena twaam anubadhnaami rakshe maa chala maa chala”Meaning ,” I tie you the rakhi that was tied to king Bali, the king
of Demons,
O Rakhi I pray that you never falter in protecting your devotee. The brother in turn blesses the sister and promises to protect her from the
evils of the world. He gifts something to her as a token of his love and
affection. The rituals may differ a little from region to region but
generally carry the same aura.
Raksha Bandhan has established its niche in India as the first of all peace programmes. Incorporating love, family, rituals, God, and peace, this festival stands as a day of celebration, and peaceful reconcilation. It has also become a means of cementing brother-sister relationships, or rather teenage faith relationships, thus making itself a means of adorable communication.
Now, let me wish each and every one of you, a happy Raksha Bandhan…
Cheerio…

The point of view
Hey all,
I don’t know if I have discussed this with you earlier, but here’s another thing that will help you gain a step more towards brotherhood, and a peaceful life.
There’s this story about a frog. I know, you’re not a child to listen to such silly stories, but once you see into it, you will understand that the story, meant as a moral story for children, can be held as a example for our topic of discussion today
.
So, here’s Mr Frog living in a small well. He was happy and contended with his surroundings, and habitat, that he never wanted to venture out of his cozy home. And one eventful day, another frog, say Mr Frogitta, jumped into the well. Frogitta was from a pond, and he told all about the pond, and the world beyond, to Mr Frog.
But Mr Frog refused to believe all that. He kept on saying that there was nothing larger than his well, and Frogitta was lying because he was jealous. Frogitta knew a lost case when he saw one, so he immediately left the pond…
Thats the story
Learnt something from it? No? Yeesh! Maybe I should do a Mr Frogitta and leave a lost case
. But because of my more “benevolent and patient” nature, I’m staying here until I explain it to you
![]()
The general meaning the story author had to convey was “Don’t be a pig and think all about yourself! Think about others too, and from their point of view…”
Uh. No Mr Donkey, we will make an exception in your case
. Well, back to the message… Noooo! Don’t click the close button! I wasn’t calling you a donkey! Look at the PICTURE!!!
![]()
So anyway, before you do something, which might directly or indirectly affect others, thing about it. Not just in your angle, but in a 3rd person angle, and in an angle from the affected person.
For example, imagine you went to a friend’s house just before lunchtime. And your friend invites you for lunch. From your point of view, “Cool man! I don’t have to cook anything today, and I can enjoy a scrumptous meal!”. But what about from a 3rd person angle? “Man! Just check out that lazy poke! Sitting there and making his friend drill over in making him food!”. And from your friend’s angle? “Sheesh! I thought that idiot would help me make lunch. Ah well. No matter, this might be a time to strengthen our friendship.” That is, if he is a good friend
![]()
So there you are… What would have been the best scenario? You accept his invitation, but help him with the work.
Thus, ladies and gentlemen, think out of the box. Don’t confine your feelings to your own. Take a moment to analyze what the effect of your action would be, and how the affectee would think about your actions…
So don’t just stand there! Go ahead and apply your new thoughts. Make your mind a multi step computer, computiing to answer the probable thoughts of all around you! Go ahead, and all the best![]()
There you are people… Think beyond the box… Optimize your point of view… Analyze your friend’s point of view…. And compute a 3rd person’s point of view…
And I confusing you? Hey! That rhymes! view, view, view, you
No, I havn’t gone mad….
Goodbye for now

Poem : It Starts With You
Hello all,
I know, a long gap since my last article… But here I am with a cool poem, which I got from the Learning Peace site I mentioned earlier…
It Starts With You
Let the eyes
inside your heart
see into the hearts
of others.
Realize
they have the need
to be accepted
just like you.
Let them see you care,
open up your mind,
treat them with respect,
show that you’re a friend.
When you do this
you will find
others treating
you the same,
opening their eyes
to look inside your heart
returning the respect
you have given them.
And one by one
the world will change;
a brighter sun
will start to rise
reminding us
that peace for all
is rooted in
the things we do.
– Naomi Drew
I know… Not much of a poem… More like a long statement. But it does make a lot of meaning! I don’t think it needs much explanation… Its quite simple to understand
Cheers
Hmmm… So what news guys? Thanks to many people, whom I will mention later on(’coz I’m a bit busy right now), who have linked to Blog For Peace from their sites…
Adios for now
Aloha!

The five “C”s to peace…
Hello all,
Today, I have decided to post another article… The idea for this one emerged in my mind when I was browsing through another peace site, so I give all credits to learningpeace.com , which is also a informative site, that I reccomend every peace activist to read.
The 5 “C“s to World Peace…
The 3 “R”s to reducing pollution - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Similarly, Peace also has a few alphabetsBut in this case, its not an “R”, but a “C”, and there are 5, not 3
![]()
Communication, Compromise, Contribution, Commitment and Cooperation
The first buzzword, is communication. Communication leads to friendship, and friendship leads to peace. After all, can you imagine killing your best friend? For those of who thought “Yes”, please read the other 4 too! Or else….![]()
Through communication, frienship, and friendly bonds can be created. But to retain these bonds, there should be compomise. Forgive, and forget. Compromise for minor issues, why fight over something baseless? After all, as Harold Kushner said,
“The small choices and decisions we make a hundred times a day add up to determining the kind of world we live in.”Now, you have your friends, and you have the keyword(”compromise!”) to help retain the friendship… But why should your friends be your friends? You need to contribute something to the community, to make yourself a positive target for friendship. And in this case, the message of peace should be the best thing to contribute. Teach, advocate, practice, peace.
But please note that contribution does not mean material gifts. Don’t come to me later, whining that you contributed a bottle of red wine to all your friend, and your friendship didn’t work out!
![]()
In whatever unmaterialistic thing you contribute (alcohol does NOT count as unmaterialistic!!!
) you need to show commitment. By commitment, a true interest in what you’re doing, you can make dreams come true! When you show commitment in your proceedings, you earn a respect among people, thus again, bringing you more friends, and as a result, more peace
.
Aaaaaaand…. The final buzzword… Co-operation. Absolute co-operation with your friends, families and foes(*aha!*), is required for Peace. Be like Bush and Hussein, and I gaurentee you, you’re not going to get anywhere near peace!
![]()
So ladies and gentlemen… Remember the five “C”s : Communicate to make friends, compromise and contribute to keep them, show your commitment to the society, and co-operate with all…
Dear beloved reader, thats all for today
And to all my Malayalee friends, happy Vishu (Malayalam new year)

PART VIII : Self Peace
Hello all,
After a long gap, here’s the last part of the “Eight days to Peace” series. And today, our topic is Self Peace.
Self Peace
The first thing required for World Peace, is self peace. Self Peace is the calmness of the inside mind. Meaning, the peace residing in your mind, body and subconscious mind. With such a peace, you are emotionally rested, and strong to face the world and its realities. Only by facing reality, will there be understanding, and by understanding, peace.
Take an example. A smile by a small kid, or a short laugh at a joke will give your mind a soothing feeling. A feeling of goodwill. A feeling which incites you to do something. But above all, a feeling which gives your mind peace, as the mind understands that you are cared for.
Thus, emotional, mind peace is obtained. But remember, as the Oracle told Neo in The Matrix, “know thyself“. With self understanding, comes self confidence. Speak to yourself often. Evaluate your good and bad. And boost your morale yourself.
Its a technique I often use on the eve of an exam
:D!!!
Another method is Yoga, and meditation. Or indulge yourself in some activity that you find to your liking. Forget about the rest of the world. Bring in att-i-tude. And let your mind soar(don’t forget to come back to the ground
).
With all these virtues, self peace comes automatically. And once you have obtained self peace, go for World Peace, and help this cause! Yeeeehaaaa!
![]()
Ladies and gentlemen, I hope to God that you have understood the meaning of this Eight Day series. And now, lets start practicing it! The least you can do is spread the word about www.blogforpeace.org among your friends, kith and kin. The most, there is no limit! So people, let’s get movin’ !
A “coloured” poem
Hello all,
Sorry for the long gap between the two posts, but I was tied up with a few stuff. But Im back now
And this time, I bring you another poem. This one was written by an african kid. Its something like the “Man with the Hoe”. A beautiful thought. A poem, asking, questioning, the masters of the world and the people all around, about why he was a downtrodden kid. Give it a thought…
Who is coloured?
When I born, I Black,
When I grow up, I Black,When I go in Sun, I Black,
When I scared, I Black,
When I sick, I Black,
And when I die, I still black…And you White fella,
When you born, you Pink,
When you grow up, you White,When you go in Sun, you Red ,
When you cold, you Blue,
When you scared, you Yellow,
When you sick, you Green ,
And when you die, you Grey…
And you calling me Coloured ??
How was that dear reader? Touching. Questioning. Evoking a guilty spirit whithin… Please remember this wherever you go, whatever you do. Casteism was invented by God for a good cause, but not untouchability, nor racial discrimination. Please remember that…

PART VII : A common good
Good evening pal,
Welcome once again to the “Eight days for Peace” series. Today’s article : A common good. But before that, we interrupt this article for a special broadcast. I HATE SPAM! Back to the show…
A common Good
How do you feel when a person lights up your life? When someone paints the back of the community shelter? When someone plants flowers along the streets? Real Good. Right?Ofcourse! When someone does something good for the community, you feel good for him ( that is unless you are a hard-brained extremist like Bush
). And you feel good when someone feels good for you… Then why not put 2 and 2 together. Do something thats good for the community, get a shower of goodwill, enjoy life! And in the process, enjoy peace!
I can give you an example of a person who did common good on a worldwide basis. But not many know him. He was featured in the Readers Digest a year ago. His name is Dave Irvine-Halliday. And what he did was, he brought light to the darkened. Didn’t catch me?
Well, Dave visited the mountains of Nepal, and was emotionally moved when he saw that most of the area was not in the power grid. Thus, he set out on a project of communal good. He made a simple light by using a bicycle and a powerful LED. His organization, named Light Up the World, now serve thousands of lightless all acoss the Indian Subcontinent and Peru. For more info, visit www.lightuptheworld.org
Dave is a perfect example for what this article conveys. I hope that all of you, in one way, or the other, will become a Dave in future…
Ladies and Gentlemen, thank you once again, for your time and patience. And please do become a Dave in different fields
And this was the penultimate issue of the series… The next one will be the last. But it might be delayed for a week, because of pestering mosquito-like syndromes, commonly called Examinations
So I’m going to be away for a week or so, adios till the next issue
